Songs my Mother Taught Me 01/29/2007

On Monday Jeannette with Ellis came and stayed overnight.

On Tuesday I played with Ellis and took him to our neighbor’s farm where we saw horses , cows, newborn calves, and Boston Terriers that he thought were cats (!) and picked up a stroller Grandma can use and a new truck toy. In the evening we went to G’mom’s (great grandmom!) and spent a good 45 minutes getting into stuff in her room)

On Wednesday I went to school in the morning, slaved away all day, came home, whipped up a 20 second delicioso supper (slight exaggeration- the speed part) and took off for a music committee meeting at church.

On Thursday it was crunch time as Progress Reports were due at the end of the day on Friday and I was still grading papers that had to be in the grade. My brother, Ron, also arrived and stayed overnight.

On Friday we had a tow hour snow delay and that re-arranges the day a bit and I was squeezing out the ominous Progress Reports. Finished, we headed ‘down the country’ to my sister’s, Emily’s, for a family party while Ron and Diana were here. Sam arrived later and Nick drove down from Lancaster. That was one late night!

On Saturday I cleaned Sam’s room , so now it is no longer Sam’s room. He turned 21 on Thursday and he has his own apartment. While there is still some of his paraphernalia (that looks very Greek and Latin to me!) I couldn’t bring myself to dispose of, it is a guest room, big enough for a double bed and a crib! And there is enough space in the closet to put a high chair to wait for its usefulness! Joel and I took Sam and a couple of his friends out to eat for supper. We were going to go to Texas Rodehouse but they had a nearly a 2 hour wait at 7PM so we went to out favorite, Kalhoun’s, where the food is always good. Double meaning inteneded!

Sunday I got up and got to church early so I could practice with my friend Eileen Cawood, as I was singing in church. After we came home we jumped in the car and took Sam back to Temple U and popped in on Bob and Grace Haymes (who tuned the piano for the Saturday night performance of Prairie Home Companion in Philadelphia!!!!) stopped by the Joneses to see if Ellis is still as cute as he was a few days earlier. That covers a large part of Philly in my mind anyway!

When I went to bed I thought of the little ditty I think I learned from my mother and it makes me laugh to think of it, but I am not sure it is supposed to!

so here is my song;

On Sunday I am happy

On Monday full of joy

On Tuesday I have peace within that nothing can destroy

On Wednesday and on Thursday I’m walking in the light

Oh, Friday is a heavenly glow

And Saturday’s always bright!”

And that my dear friends is the inspiration of this blog!

Everyone wants a title. My emails want a title, my blog wants a title and my headmaster wants a title to my lesson. I always think who cares about a title? It must be that ’70s culture still attached to me. You know, that ‘who cares’. Maybe it isn’t limited to the the 70s. Truth be told I hardly ever have a title to my lesson, but if he wants one quick I can make one up quick!
Yesterday Nick came by and was asking where he might see an eagle. So I told him the spots I had seen them and said that he might someone to come along so you have two pairs of eyes looking out for birds and for traffic. Then I got smart and invited myself along! It wqas kind of a gloomy day and had started to spritz before we got anywhere. There was no traffic on the Muddy Run Dam so he just stopped the truck on the road and we gazed into the gorge there. Then we turned on to 372 and went over Noman Wood Bridge over the Susquehanna (Luisa used to say Quisquishanna- I can’t think of it without thinking of that lovely lispy sound!) and took a turn right along it to the Holtwood Dam which is a major source of energy for Pennsylvanians. You can walk right down to the water, although they have big warning signs that say if you hear sirens you had better scat! Nick got several good pictures with his new digital camera. Maybe if we’re lucky he will post them someday.
I am so sleepy from this cold. I am not quite sure what it is. I always hate to go to bed with a cold because lying there makes me cough more. We’re having leftover Chinese food for lunch. Hurray for the Chinese!
p.s. It was too rainy for birds like eagles

There is your translation of my title. The first one was so unoriginal that I had to come up with something else! So my little Latin dictionary serves me well. I always tell my students that I think that ‘tunc’ and ‘nunc’ sound like hobbits! Joel and I are toasting ourselves by the fire and he is gorging on football because the Ravens and the Colts are playing and the Colts used to be the Baltimore team. Then we have to watch the Eagles because they actually made it to playoffs! I’m just playing on the computer and I take a break now and then for a good cough! I’m very tolerant since he spent a few days at a Trade Show this week. And he keeps that fire going. Trade Show season is back. Not my favorite time, and it lasts till the end of July. He likes doing them, though.
Yesterday at school we had ‘Pastor Appreciation Day’ and I had a Catholic priest visit my classroom. I had this feeling it wasn’t the first time. My 6th graders are a pretty bouncy bunch but they are *engaged* for the most part and we made it fun for him. After we had sung ‘Pater te Adoro’ he said, I never heard that one in Latin and I had to tell him I made it up…. the Latin part, but it was pretty straightforward.
I stayed home sick on Thursday and I watched TV all day! I don’t think I ever did that before! I watched the Today show and a couple of boring talk shows, a whole lot of commercials! Then I put in Monarch of the Glen DVD and watched all four episodes!
Well, this is enough for the first time. Maybe later Jeannette and I can make it pretty!
